4 Foot Injuries Athletes Often Face

1. Achilles Tendonitis

The Achilles tendon, located near the ankle, is the longest in the body and is one of the strongest. Overuse is the most common cause of injury to this tendon. Repeated impact and strain on the muscle from playing sports will eventually cause Achilles tendonitis.

Characterized by small tears, swelling, and sudden pain near the ankle, Achilles tendonitis makes walking difficult and painful. Severe cases may need surgery, but most cases can be solved by rest and physical therapy, such as movement 101.

2. Plantar Fasciitis

Plantar fasciitis is the most common cause of heel pain and one of the most common foot injuries runners experience. This injury is caused by repeated pressure and strain placed on the tissue connecting your heel bone to your toes.

To relieve the symptoms, your feet will need lots of rest to recover. It might also be time for a new pair of more supportive shoes.

3. Ankle Sprains

Ankle sprains happen when the foot moves inwards, causing the ankle to push outwards unnaturally. Losing your balance, rolling your ankle in the middle of a game, or tripping can all cause a sprain, making it one of the most common sports injuries.

Sprained ankle treatment includes rest and reducing pain and swelling. It’s best if you practice ankle mobility exercises to increase the range of motion. Recovering also involves a gradual return to sports, so it’s best to start small instead of jumping right back into training.

4. Turf Toe

Turf toe is most common among football players but can happen to any athlete who plays sports that involve twisting and lots of starting and stopping. It occurs when the ligaments in the big toe are hyperextended, causing a sprain.

Treatment for turf toe includes rest, ice, compression, and elevation. If the symptoms don’t subside, you may have to consult your doctor, but surgery is seldom needed.
