Guide to Gottman Method Professional Training

Are you looking to advance your skills in couples work and considering The Gottman Method professional training course? If yes, then here is the right guide for you.

Gottman Method Couple Therapy can be used to help couples repair their relationship, individuals with other relational issues, and even individuals supporting their spouses who are being treated for addiction, depression, anxiety, or other mental illnesses.

The Gottman Method stands out from other couples counseling approaches because of the unique way it was developed. Gottman researchers used the scientific process to gather extensive evidence of successful relationships, then developed a theory for couples counseling based on the evidence. The scientific process involved more than 40 years of researching 3,000+ couples to identify patterns and behaviors in happy and unhappy marriages.

As a result of the comprehensive research, The Gottman Method has proven to be effective. More than 100,000 clinicians worldwide have trained in Gottman Method Couples Therapy.

To become certified, a therapist must complete three levels of training and undergo a Certification Track. Some of the training descriptions below are from the Gottman Institute’s website:

Gottman Level 1 Training

You will learn the Gottman Method’s basic concepts,  Dr. John Gottman’s breakthrough research, fundamental data-based assessments, and effective interventions. This training is for mental health providers, allied professionals and clergy, students and interns, family clinic staff, professors/teachers of couples therapy, researchers in the social sciences, and employee assistance professionals. There are no prerequisites.

“In this workshop, you will be provided with a research-based roadmap for helping couples compassionately manage their conflicts, deepen their friendship and intimacy, and share their life purpose and dreams based on the Sound Relationship House Theory.

“You will be introduced to Dr. Gottman’s breakthrough research on thousands of couples to understand the difference between the “Masters” and “Disasters” of relationships. If you are not already doing assessments, this training will teach you how to assess a relationship’s strengths and areas of concern using empirically validated questionnaires.

“You will view original videos of real couples from the famous Gottman “Love Lab,” as well as videos of Dr. Julie Gottman demonstrating assessment and interventions in a case example from her private practice.

Gottman Level 2 Training:

Level 2 training expands your assessment strategies and intervention techniques. The training includes role-plays and viewing of videos of Drs. John and Julie Gottman in clinical settings. You will have the skills and resources to integrate the Gottman Method into your practice.

Completion of Level 1 Training is required.

“This workshop provides a wealth of information about relationship theory, observation, couple dynamics, relationship assessment, treatment planning, when and how to use interventions, and working with co-morbidities.

“This training dives deep into the Gottman Method approach for treating complicated cases involving co-morbidities, including affairs, PTSD, addiction, and domestic violence.”

 Gottman Level 3 Training:

This advanced training is only offered in person. The skills and knowledge gained will allow you to effectively work with clients who are resistant and have co-morbidities, and draw upon methods to heal couples.

Completion of Level 1 Training and Level 2 Training is required, as well as a master’s degree, doctoral degree, or current enrollment in a graduate program within a mental health-related field is required. Therapy experience is highly recommended, but not required.

“Master how to effectively use the Oral History Interview during a couple’s assessment and understand its implications. You will learn how to clearly explain to a couple their strengths and challenges in terms of the Sound Relationship House, and how to help partners identify their own ‘Four Horsemen’ and understand the antidotes.

“You will learn how to successfully intervene when one or both partners are flooding, help a couple reach solutions using the Compromise Ovals intervention, and sensitively intervene when co-morbidities are present.

Certification Track

The final step in the Gottman Method professional training is the Certification Track. You must start the Track within 2 years of completing Level 3. Once you start, you have 2 years to the Certification Track. You will be guided by a Senior Certified Gottman Therapist who will help you implement Gottman Method Couples Therapy successfully in your practice. One of the requirements is 100 hours of clinical work using the Gottman Method.

The Track includes 8 hours of consultation with your matched Senior Certified Gottman Therapist (or 12 hours of group consultation). You must also submit videos of your counseling work to be reviewed by your consultant.
